The word “Ayurveda” has is a combination of two words “AYUH” and “VED”. AYUH has meaning of life and VED has meaning of knowledge and two words make the meaning of knowledge of life and it teaches how life can be made longer, how life can be made free from illness, how a man can have sound mind, sound health and body. We can say that it is medical science of ancient times. In Ayurveda there are not only formulae of preparing medicines to fight against any illness, there are Yoga, Pranayam and Meditation also.

Ayurveda is the oldest medical science in the world. Bhagwan Dhanvantari was the first person who gave the knowledge of Ayurveda. It is as old as Vedas are. Rigved, Yajurved, Samved and Atharvved are believed to be oldest written books in the world. Atharvved contains topics of Ayurveda. Though historians are not of the one opinion when these 4 books came into existence. Some learned historians say that these books were written more than 10000 years ago. Some Western historians are of the opinion that these books came into existence between 7500 years and 5500 years ago. Historians believe that Ayurveda came into existence during Vedic civilization period and Vedic civilization period is older than Pyramids of Egypt.

We have evidence that when Lord Buddha’s advent occurred, Ayurveda was taught as a separate subject in Gurukul and Universities. In Takshashila, Vikramshila and Nalanda universities Ayurveda was taught as a separate subject and during ancient times students from China, Sri Lanka, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Iran etc used to come to India for taking education of Ayurveda ancient medical science.

More than 2000 years ago many books on Ayurveda were written and some of these books are Charak Samhita, Sushrut Samhita, Vaishajya Ratnavali etc. Government of India recognizes these books and formulae of preparing medicines mentioned in these books.

In Ayurveda there are not only formulation of medicines to fight against illness or conditions of illness it is also taught how we can have sound mind and body, free from any mental or physical illness. There are useful guidance what and when we should eat, and what should be our daily routine.
